Dancers with Heart & Sole
Every year, the Sue Hewitt Dance Family plans a variety show to earn money for a charitable organization. The show is titled “Dancers with Heart and Sole (DwHaS)” and the motto is: “We use the soles of our feet to dance and our hearts to give others a chance.”
Our mission is to teach our dancers to understand the needs of others and the importance of giving back to the community by using our talents to benefit others. We will do this by having the dancers organize, plan and/or perform in a show to raise money for children in need in Indiana County.
Over the last eleven years, we have given away over $62,000!
Our 2017 show raised $6,293 - our donation was divided among the following causes:
Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation - www.crb1.org
This organization was chosen in honor of Lochlan Whited and the Love for Lochlan campaign
The Care Center of Indiana County - www.carecenterofindianaco.org
Hopeful Hearts - www.hopefulheartspa.org
As well as the SHDS Dance Family Fund & SHDS Scholarship Fund
Our 2016 show raised over $6,500. We chose two community groups to share the funds: ICCAP and the ARC of Indiana County.
In addition, we gave money to Makenna's Happy Hearts Mission - Makenna McMasters is one of Sue's dancers who wanted to provide blankets and bears to children who are homeless or do not have a safe place to sleep. You can find her on Facebook!
We also decided to help someone within our own Dance Family by paying the yearly expenses for a young dancer, who's single, self-employed mom is dealing with some major health issues.
Our 2015 show raised over $6,000 with the majority of our funds being donated to Reflections of Grace, which is a foundation established in memory of young dancer, Grace Ekis, who died from pediatric brain cancer. In addition, we allocated a portion of our earnings to a Dance Family Emergency Fund, as well as a scholarship fund for an aspiring SHDS dancer.
The Salvation Army has been the recipient of our donation for seven years. Prior to that we gave to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Not only is our DwHaS show a great opportunity for the dancers to learn to give to others, it is also an opportunity for the dancers to showcase their own choreography, as well as present their other talents like singing or playing an instrument. Over the years, guest performers have been invited to join our efforts such as the IHS Dance Team, the Footlight Players, and various choral groups.
We look forward to this annual event!
